Report from Nsanda

Preparing the sowing by ploughing

Nsanda Group has cultivated 8 hectares of land, divided into 5 hectares peanuts, 3 hectares soy beans and entire land by cassava. So we have mixed cassava with peanuts and soy beans.

We have sown from November 4 to 30, all eight have cassava. The work is done by 18 temporary workers among them was a 14 years old girl who had no financial support for the school. The work has cost us the 26/11 $ 820 but it will cost more from 29-30/11, when we were in Luozi while it was the presidential election.

From 7-19/11, we have sown 5 hectares peanuts by 9 women. They received $ 480 as wages.

Finally, we planted soy beans in two days  16 – 30 / 11 by using 10 women. That cost us $ 100.

In all this, the work plan was going on well and just hope that it will rain enough so that we get a good harvest.

Some difficulties:

It was not so easy to manage, everything was done by hand. We are now considering how we can equip ourselves with farm implements and machinery in order to cultivate more land.

During the election campaign the dollar dropped against the franc so that all was not ready to accept dollars as payment. We paid our workers $ 550 but they do not want it in dollars, although we have made up the wage in dollar. We wait a while until after the elections.

Since Nsanda groups members live so far apart, we can not give a financial report from the beginning until now, but we must do it as soon as possible. But one thing is sure that the members’ financial contribution we are waiting for to cover all costs (especially to those who have not paid the agreed stake or work physically on the ground)

There are positive things with Nsanda groups activity:

37 families received financial help through the wages they received from us with school fees, healthcare and household, a woman bought a plate for her housetop.

God bless all our readers and friends

The engine in the box on the truck and they keep on working to get it out and if all goes well, it should be out on Saturday. Now finally Jean-Pierre will get his truck working and can launch his trucking business.

I am also collecting payments from our contractors who got their loans in February. Thank you and hope you understand.

News from Nsanda

Education of the Nsanda Group

I´m sitting in Yapeco´s cyber cafe and writing a small report from our work in Nsanda group engaged in agriculture.

We are 13 members (7 young people and 6 are over 60 years). We are sitting in meetings and make decisions regarding our agricultural projects. We have already had two, we should have had more but many of whose members live far from Nsanda. We call each other when needed.

8 hectares is ready and now we make the last of sowing. We decided to have cassava on the entire area, 5 hectares of peanuts and 3 hectares soy beans. This means that we mix cassava with peanuts and soy beans. From November 3rd until today we have sown five hectares cassava, three have peanuts and Friday November 18 we will be sowning soy beans according to our plan.

We are doing everything with hack, that means it is by hand and it takes longer time and more expensive with labour than if we had had sowing machines. We are considering how to get these machines to facilitate the work in the future

From the very beginning of Nsanda group has many family greeting the project welcome. We have hired seven men and three women. 19 men are working to bring cassava, 10 women who are sowing peanuts and five women will be sowing soy beans.

Work is progressing despite the fact that labour is relatively expensive. And we are pleased that members of Nsanda Group understands that everyone has to help and make their effort to move forward. Last Monday came a member with her husband to help, and two members deposited $ 200 in support of the work.

To give you an idea of what it costs in wages with the sowing work, I give a little information here. Putting cassava costs $ 240.10 per hectare. To sowing five hectares peanuts costs $ 680. The invoice for the sowing of three hectares soy beans, I get today.

Heartily greetings from Nsanda Group members who appreciate all the support we get to change our lives.

Luthelo Muller keeps campaigning

Luthelo Muller. He is now working as boss for the bridge over the Congo River

Luthelo Muller. He is now working as boss for the bridge over the Congo River

The Democratic Republic of Congo is in unrest since October 28, the day when the campaign for the election of both president and parliament, was launched.

Our Carrefour Socioculturel (Youth House) has become the place where Luthelo Muller, the son of Mother Matila received members of GCSL to inform the public that he is a candidate for parliament and explain to them why he was embarking on a political career. It was on Saturday 28/10/2011.

Saturday, November 5, 2011, it was time for 240 representatives of area Wombo in Territoire de Soongololo, Matadi, for the same campaign. The hall was full and the rest were outside.

Le Groupe Chrétien de soutien Libre (the Christian aid group) is pleased at the high participation rates in our area. It is a real marketing and even exaltation.

Now it is also rainy season and it’s hot, but we already have two inside lights that work well when the power supply is good.

best regards
Samuel

A good entrepreneur

Demba is one of the most talented entrepreneurs who have participated in our training and got their loans in February 2011. Previously he has been treasurer and accounting manager in the CEC Church’s publishing house. The employment contract has ended and now he has started a general store. You see him in his shop at the pictures. In his shop included offices, school supplies and some food. Demba has a good business location in Matadi and pays rent to the city for its location. He says that customers even come from Angola. He makes the long hours in his shop, opening hours from early morning until 10 o’clock at night. Through the loans we could offer him, he could make cheaper purchases and thus make their business more profitable. Demba conducts its business in an exemplary manner and it is pleasure to work with him.

Now we are going to sow in Nsanda

Nsanda Group has in September worked up eight hectares of land. We will cultivate cassava on 8 hectares, peanuts on 5 hectares and soya beans on 3 hectares. Soil preparation is now complete and went well despite the fact that the agricultural machinery from Sweden was not suitable for our soil, for that reason we had to do harrowing once again. This lead to double work.

But we are looking forward.

We bought 600 kg peanuts. It took us two weeks to peel them by hand, 23 kg of soya beans, 20 000 meters cassava stalks, which we now cut off in 20 cm pieces which we are putting in the soil.

The rainy season has come and we will start sowing on Wednesday onwards. We estimate that it takes us two weeks to do the sowing and cassava planting.

Best regards  Julienne o Clement

The coordinator who introduced the number of visitors, amounting to 864 persons who have participated in various activities organized by the organization, estimated that Carrefour’s financial report for the first year was positive. But there is still much to do.

Youth worker and contractor

E-mail from George Muditu.
Sorry, it was a long time since you heard of me. My family and I feel good. Samuel Nkailu however, has been quite sick but is better now.

In the picture to the left, Muditu with his wife Josephine giving a present from their harvest of peanuts.

We have many activities in the Youth House, but we have problems with electricity. When we use it, the power often goes out.

I did not pay the loan in September because I am waiting for payment from one of my biggest customers.

Concerning our crops, we will cultivate three hectares. It will be soy beans, peanuts, cassava and corn.

Below some pictures from the youth center.

Two entrepreneurs with egg production

Now Augustine’s chickens have become egg producing hens. Augustine participated in our training a year ago and got her loan in February. She has tripled her production of eggs and is now also rearing broilers. On the picture Augustine, her son Stig and daughter Signe take care of their hens and chickens, and sort and package the eggs. Approx. 1,500 eggs per day are produced. Customers include restaurants, hotels, wholesalers and consumers. The same training had Axel Biongo and he bought 120 chickens in February. They are also already laying eggs. The daily production is between 90 – 100 eggs per day. Customers are consumers and he even sells boiled eggs to travellers on the main road next by.
